Classified ad sites are a great way to drive an abundance of targeted traffic to your website. Classified ads are easily searchable by the search engines and the advertisement format enables you to target specific needs and groups within your audience. Couple that with the fact that many classified ad sites are free or very inexpensive, and you can have a winning traffic strategy with unlimited return on investment.

What are classified ad sites?

Classified advertising sites are essentially sites that allow you to post classified ads. One of the more common ones is Craigslist, which people commonly use to post items for sale, jobs and opportunities. You can also use this site to post an ad for your business. It’s free, you can target your geographic area and there’s no limit to the number of ads you post or the number of regions you post your ad in.

To find other classified ad sites, all you have to do is type the term into your search engine. You’ll literally find hundreds of options. To optimize your time, evaluate the site based on usage. If the ad site only draws 100 visitors a day, that’s not a great reach. However if it draws 100,000 visitors a day, you’re in good hands.

The benefits of classified ad sites

Many classified ad sites are free, which means your return on investment is practically guaranteed. Additionally, search engines are extremely fond of classified ad sites because they’re constantly generating new content. This means your ad stands a very good chance of showing up high on the search engine results. It also provides incoming links to your site, which is good for your search engine optimization.

Creating a classified ad

Creating a classified ad for one of these sites take a bit of planning. You want to make sure the site is right for you and your audience first. Make sure the terms of service meet your needs and view other classified ads to see what’s possible and how your ad might look.

Advertising is all about tapping into your prospect’s need, capturing their attention and promising a solution in usually less than 100 words. Study ads that you are compelling and effective, spend some time writing ads and then test ads to see which ones your audience responds to. That’s the great thing about classified ad sites – you can change your ad or post a new one quite easily.

Tips for maximizing your classified ad strategy

There are two essential tips for optimizing your ad strategy. The first is to make sure you write new ads for each site you submit to. This will prevent duplicate content issues and will ensure your classified ad meets the site’s terms and conditions.

Additionally, you can submit them to social bookmarking sites. This is a great way to increase awareness and website traffic.

Classified ads are not a new way to drive traffic to a website; however, it’s a very effective traffic strategy and you can’t beat the return on investment. Add this tool to your traffic generation strategy and watch the numbers grow.

Why is it that it’s so easy to say you’re going to do something and so difficult to follow through and actually make it happen? The key is to cultivate self-discipline and persistence however, that’s sometimes easier said than done, right?

Here are a few tips to become self-disciplined and persistent – tips to make things happen in your life!

#1 Eliminate, or at least set aside, emotion. Self-discipline is the ability to move forward and to take action regardless of how you feel. Let’s say you decide you want to lose weight. When you make that decision, you’re probably feeling pretty motivated and confident. You probably went so far as to formulate a plan to make it happen.

Let’s say, for argument’s sake, you decide you’re going to get up every day and exercise for 30 minutes as part of your weight loss plan. That may go along swimmingly for a couple days and then all of a sudden you wake one morning and for one reason or another, you aren’t feeling very positive or motivated.

Maybe you got some bad news the night before that’s affecting you. It happens to us all and it’s completely understandable. The difference between those with self-discipline and those without is the person without will let their emotions affect their decisions and actions. Instead of getting up and exercising, they’ll stay in bed.

To cultivate self-discipline and persistence, set those emotions aside. Recognize them, accept them, and then move them aside and don’t let them get in the way of your goals.

#2 Cultivate an appreciation and a pattern of success. It’s always easier to persevere if you’re accustomed to succeeding. To become accustomed to succeeding, start setting little goals each day and week. Sticking with the weight loss example, because it’s so accessible, if you set a goal to lose 100 pounds that goal will seem huge and unattainable.

However, if you set a goal to lose 3 pounds, then that’s a more attainable goal. You’ll accomplish it and feel great about yourself. The next step, would to then set another attainable goal and to continue the process thus developing a pattern of success. However, even if your long-term goal is to lose weight, it’s good to cultivate this skill in all areas of your life.

Set goals for productivity, financial matters, personal habits and relationships, any area of your life where you would benefit from a pattern of success, willpower and persistence.

#3 Make small changes. In line with setting attainable goals and developing a pattern of success, make small changes in your life towards a larger goal. For example, if you want to lose weight then one habit to change might be to drink more water. So you might want to drink one glass of water with every meal and snack. This is a small change but it makes a big difference in your life. It may offer some challenges but they’re certainly challenges you can manage, thus developing your persistence and will power with smaller, and meaningful steps.

Finally, reward yourself for your accomplishments. Celebrating your successes is a great way to help you stay positive and persistent toward achieving your goals. Self-discipline and persistence aren’t something we’re all born with but it is something you can develop.

It’s long been accepted that positive thinking can give you a better, happier life, but it can also help boost your business and actually make you more successful.

Successful entrepreneurs need a lot of qualities, but the one that is probably the most important is persistence. Successful businesses often have their failures, but they pick themselves up and keep on going. So what do you do if you’re not a naturally persistent person? Change your way of thinking!

If you look at a situation positively, you’re going to eventually see the possibilities rather than the failures. That becomes just the push to keep you going, keep you trying and eventually make you more successful.

A positive attitude in general makes you a happier person, and happier people are more appealing to do business with. Sure, people can be annoyed when someone is ALWAYS sunshine and smiles, but they’d much rather deal with someone who is positive and happy than a grumpy person who doesn’t see the potential in things.

It’s a great idea to start thinking more positively, but if you’re like me, it’s a lot harder to put into practice. Here are a few steps, some large, some small, that you can take to put a more positive spin on your business and your life.

- Surround yourself with positive people. You can’t choose everyone you have to talk to, but you can make sure the people you do choose aren’t dragging you down. If you find your husband or a good friend is constantly bringing in negativity, try talking to them and making it a challenge to both turn your thinking around.

- Use positive affirmations. These are positive statements about yourself and your business that you repeat several times at least once a day. Eventually you will find that you start believing these things more and more.

- Make a list of accomplishments. At the end of every day, make a list of what you got done that day, or simply what you’ve accomplished with your business overall. Make sure nothing is negative and purposely push the negative thoughts from your head. The next day you can read these accomplishments to help give you a positive boost to start your day.

- Take care of yourself. If you feel good, you’re more likely to be positive about the world around you. You might find help from exercise and a healthier diet, but can also get benefit from activities like meditation or yoga. They are great for clearing your mind of negative thoughts and giving you a fresh new perspective on life.

If you take small steps to make yourself more positive, you’ll probably get some big boosts in your business success.

If you go into any large, successful company and look at their employee materials, somewhere you’ll probably find a vision statement, or some similar form of guidance or goals for the company. That’s because a vision statement is one of the most important things a company can have.

When you think about a long race or long project, which part do you think is the hardest? Which part do you think is the easiest part to just give up? Logically, you would think it was the end, but if you think harder, the end is actually pretty easy. That’s because, even though you’re drained you can still see your goal in sight, which pushes you to keep going.

The purpose of a vision statement is to keep yourself going when you’re tired, but not even close to achieving your goals. A vision statement reminds you that there is a point, there is an end in sight, and if you keep pushing you’ll get there. Vision is what keeps us from giving up on our dreams.

So how do you make your businesses vision statement? Basically you just have to sit down and figure out what you want. Sounds pretty simple, but if you’re ever actually tried to accomplish this, you know it’s a bit more difficult than it sounds.

To write your statement, think about what you want – from your life, from your business, and for your family. If it helps, you might want to write separate statements for your personal life and your business.

While having a vision statement is great, the simple act of writing one is a benefit in itself. It causes you to sit down and think about what you REALLY want out of your business, and out of your life. This is something many of us have never actually done.

While it is beneficial to have an all-encompassing vision statement, it also helps for it to be fairly short and concise. This may take a while to do, but is worth it in the long run.

Once you have your vision statement, be sure to keep it in mind. It doesn’t work to push or motivate yourself if you forget about it completely. Make sure to put your vision statement in some form, whether it be the whole statement or just key words and pictures, where you’ll see it on a regular basis. This way it will keep you motivated and pushing for your dreams.

If you have a business with employees or where customers and business partners come to your office, it could be beneficial to post your vision statement somewhere that everyone can see it. This will help motivate your employees and let your customers know what it is you’re about and what you’re committed to.

It may take some time and some thought, but a well thought out vision statement can be a fantastic tool for your business.

Medical transcription is the process by which voice recordings are transferred into electronic file form. When a doctor completes a visit with his or her patient, the doctor then speaks into a recording device and verbally notes details about the visit. Medical transcriptionists, or MTs, then listen to these recordings and type the words into a computer. The typed medical records then become part of the patient’s medical record. If this sounds like something that may interest you or fits your skill set, there are some things to consider before getting started.

Equipment you need depends on the type of dictation that the hospital or doctor’s office does, and whether you choose to work locally or work for clients nationally or even worldwide. No matter which market you choose to target, however, you will need a reliable computer with the appropriate software, a foot pedal, and a headset.

If you work for a doctor who uses mini tapes, you will need a mini cassette transcriber. However, more and more medical professionals are opting for digital dictation, which requires a reliable, fast internet connection and the capacity to download FTP files. You will also want a medical spell checker on your computer, and familiarize yourself with an online medical dictionary. A printer and possibly a fax machine (or access to one) are also start-up necessities.

Training courses can be found online, and you can work from home or attend an MT school. If you have experience working in the medical profession, you can enter the MT field without specific training. Nonetheless, hospitals tend to prefer employees who are specifically trained in medical transcription.

The MT job market is fairly lucrative, which offsets the modest cost of the equipment and training. According to roguecc.edu, the average MT can expect to make $10 an hour to start, and around $15 per hour as you become more advanced. If you work as an independent contractor and run your own small business, there is potential for greater income as you set your own prices and offer more services.

Your personality and abilities will need to include attention to detail and the ability to edit your work. Medical terminology can be quite complicated, and a mistake typed into a patient’s medical record could be disastrous or even life-threatening. Imagine the confusion that could result if an MT typed “contusion” instead of “concussion,” or entered the wrong medication. You will also need to be a fast typist as well as an accurate one.

Confidentiality is essential. Medical records are strictly confidential, and you will need a private space in which to do your transcription so that no one can read what’s on your computer screen or listen to the voice recording (whether or not you are present).

With the proper training and set-up, medical transcription has potential as a good source of income. Ask yourself if it’s for you.

You’ve probably been hearing about Twitter a lot lately. It has become the latest rage for keeping up to date on absolutely everything. While Twitter can be great for contacting friends or finding out about the latest gossip, it’s also an easy and effective way to build your business.

Twitter is a social networking site, much like Facebook or Myspace. Twitter allows you to “tweet” from your computer, phone, or other mobile device. Posts must be short. This allows you to keep your followers updated on everything that’s going on with you. Followers can be friends, relatives, or, the most important for you, current and potential customers.

To promote your business effectively with Twitter, you have to have followers. There’s really no point in tweeting if no one is reading it. Here are a few quick tips to gain followers:

Follow people, they’ll often reciprocate. Often it’s pretty easy to find someone in your field who you can follow. They may have a popular website, blog or newsletter and will post their Twitter ID (or you can search for them). Don’t stop there; Twitter allows you to not only find out what’s going on with them, but lets you see who they’re following and lets you become a follower as well. The beauty in this is that once someone sees that you’re following them, they’ll often follow you back. Just be sure not to follow too many people at first. Keep it close to the number of people that are following you.

Often people will do the same thing you did. They’ll find people they like and know of and see who they’re following. So simply by getting a few people to follow you, you’ll often build up more followers without doing anything.

If you want word about you to spread on Twitter, you need to make your tweets count. Sure, you want to link to your website when you have updates, but you also want to give them a reason for listening to you. Has someone published an awesome new product? Posted a helpful blog post? Is there a big sale going on? Pass this info on. If people know you’ve got good info to pass on, they’ll become your follower, and then hopefully your customer. Remember to choose wisely. If you’re constantly tweeting, people might stop following you.

Remind your current contacts that you’re on Twitter. Whether it’s a customer you do business with or someone you meet at a business seminar, pass on the fact that you’re on Twitter. When you tell them, you can also ask for their contact and become a follower yourself. This will remind them who you are and help them remember to follow you.

You might also want to take advantage of different software that works with Twitter. There are programs that automatically post tweets from your blogs, ones to keep you updated on the tweets of others, and countless others.

If used properly, Twitter can be a great way to build an audience and keep your relationship going with current contacts.

If you have no other reason for self-development, technology is it. Technology is changing constantly, and if you’re not up to date, you’re probably going to be left behind. Even if you choose not to use what’s available, you need to be knowledgeable to keep up with your marketing methods and to figure out how to get ahead of those who are using these technologies.

An important part of being a small business owner is staying connected to other people. You generally need people to work with, and you don’t just need to meet them, you also need them to think you’re knowledgeable and worth working with. Going to classes and seminars not only helps you meet business contacts, it also helps you gain knowledge so you can sound like you know what you’re doing and people will want to give you business.

If you own your own small business, you probably are well aware of the rush you get when you take on a new project or come up with a new idea or new way to get things done more efficiently. Gradually, however, that initial push wears off and you sink back into the same old plodding-through work.

Now imagine if you were learning about a cool new product or idea every few weeks, or even every day. You could keep that energy burst going and going. That’s one of the biggest benefits of self-expansion. It keeps you excited about work and wanting to learn more and do more. And in the end, you get more done.

If you’re working on your own, you don’t have a boss to constantly offer to send you to meetings and conferences to expand your horizons. That means you have to find them yourself.

There are all kinds of options out there for self-expansion. Here are just a few general categories but the list goes on:

- E-books
- Seminars
- Local classes
- Online courses
- Newsletters

With all the options available, it’s may be hard for you to figure out which direction you want to go. There are thousands of programs, newsletters, seminars, ebooks, and all kinds of products out there to help you expand yourself and your business.

Before you try to find ways to develop yourself, you need to figure out what you want. This means setting your priorities and business goals. Do you want to make lots of money? Do you want to help others? Or do you just want to have a career your can balance with your already full life? What you want is the most important thing and should be your starting point.

Once you have a vague direction, talk to other people with the same interests and ask for options. Starting with things like newsletters and message boards are great because they’ll probably help you find more information for self-expansion. The key to staying successful is to never stop learning.

Chances are, you enjoy creating and designing websites. And in this day and age, every business needs one, and the more creative and effective, the better. You can set up your own web design business and provide a needed service while making an income. Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Learn HTML. You probably are already familiar with the workings of HTML, but if not, you can take advantage of the multiple online resources such as ebooks and articles. Offline, there are many books in print that can help familiarize you with HTML.

2. Develop a plan. As with any business, you’ll need to take the time to organize your goals and the processes necessary to reach them. Do you have the time to devote to running a business? Do you have a reliable internet connection and computer? How are you going to pay taxes and are you aware of tax deductions for your business? What is your target market and your area of expertise? How much money do you want to make? These are some of the questions you’ll need to ask yourself as you embark on your web design business.

3. Determine what services you are going to offer. In addition to designing and creating a website, you may want to offer hosting or tutorial videos to help small business owners.

4. Create your own website. This is where you will refer all potential clients, and it needs to be a good example of your skill. You will also need to have a folder of sample websites on your site that prospective clients can review. If you have not yet worked for a client, design a few sample websites and put those in your samples folder.

5. Determine what you’ll charge for your services. In your plan, you determined how much income you need. You’ll also need to determine the number of hours you can work per week or month, and divide this by the amount of money you’d like to make. In other words, if you want to make $1000 a month and can devote 100 hours a month to your business, then you need to be making at least $10 per hour. While you don’t have to charge by the hour (you can charge by the service), you need to make a reasonable estimation of how long these services take and charge accordingly so that you average $10 an hour (or whatever you want to make).

6. Promote your business. Offer to design a web page for a well-known company for no charge and use it for a sample on your personal site, and see referrals come your way. Contact past employers and let them know you are in the web design business. You might consider setting up a profile on sites like LinkedIn or Facebook, and use social networking as a source of contacts.

7. Watch out for resources that make false promises. As you look for online sources of information, be on the lookout for sites that promise you that, if you follow their business plan, you’ll make millions of dollars overnight. Steer clear of anything that sounds too good or too easy to be true. Developing a business is rewarding, but it requires time and effort to make it happen.

Maybe you love to travel, or have a great deal of experience and knowledge about vacation destinations. Maybe you just like the idea of working from home and discussing the best vacation spots! These days, most people make their travel arrangements via the internet, which opens a door of opportunity to work as a travel agent from home. Here are a few tips and guidelines for getting started.

Find out your state’s laws regarding licensing

Some states require travel agents to be licensed. If such is the case in your state, you’ll need to find out what is required to obtain your license. Certain fees may apply and will need to be considered as part of your start-up costs.

Equipment

How you set up your home office will affect your efficiency and productivity. You will need an area devoted to your business, with a filing cabinet, telephone, and computer equipped with a fast internet connection such as dsl or cable. Your computer will also need appropriate travel software, such as SABRE. You also might consider investing in a headset so that you can speak with a client on the phone while finding information on your computer.

Find a niche

You’ll want to specialize in a particular area of travel to determine your target market and keep your focus. Some possibilities are cruises, family vacations, spa retreats, and honeymoons. Go with what appeals to you and where the market is strongest.

Find a reputable agency through whom to work

While you will be working as an independent travel agent, working with a reputable travel agency that will support you in meeting your business goals is worthwhile. Look for a company that has a good reputation, particularly in your niche, with a strong online presence. Such companies can help get you started with a client base, and often make a point of hiring agents who work from home. It saves the agency overhead costs and working under their “umbrella” will save you the work of getting clients from scratch.

Set competitive fees

There is a lot of demand for travel agents and the business is lucrative, but because of its popularity there is a great deal of competition. You’ll want to find out what a typical agent charges and set your fees accordingly. You might also consider offering some services for free for promotional purposes, especially at the beginning of your business venture. And be sure to pamper your clients and keep them “grandfathered in” to your original rates if you raise them later.

Include marketing in your budget

You might consider hiring a professional to work with you in marketing your business. Such experts abound online, and their fees vary. Usually, they offer various packages with different options to fit your marketing needs. You can also use social networking (such as Facebook and Twitter) to circulate your name and promote your business.

It’s exciting to live in a day and age when technology has opened up the possibility of working from home as a travel agent. Get your clients excited along with you, and you’ll be in business!

The greening of America is underway, and families, businesses and individuals are seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint and live in an environmentally sustainable way. Going green helps the business owner attract an increasing number of similarly-minded customers, and more and more individuals want to go green for the health of their families.

Eco-consultants help people evaluate their lifestyles and living spaces, and advise them on how they can go green. To become an eco-consultant, you’ll need to ask yourself some questions and develop a plan before stepping into this lucrative field.

1. Define your goals and area(s) of expertise. What, specifically, do you want to do with your business? Do you want to advise corporations, families, small businesses, or someone else? Do you prefer to speak with individuals or hold corporate workshops? And where is your greatest interest and knowledge – water conservation? Solar energy? Green building materials and techniques? These are important questions to ask yourself before embarking on your business.

2. Get educated and/or certified. Just loving the planet and being concerned about the environment are not enough to endear you to clients. Consider becoming LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified or continuing your education on eco-friendly living. Being an eco-consultant requires a specific knowledge base.

Do your research so you can speak knowledgably to your clients about all the potential benefits of going green, as well as competent implementation of green lifestyle choices. You’ll also need to have a list of reliable sources and manufacturers of environmentally-friendly building supplies from whom your clients can buy the appropriate materials.

3. Be realistic. While going green is good for the planet, it’s not realistic to expect that your consulting business is going to alleviate global warming and save the environment overnight. And some homes and businesses can’t be 100% green. That’s okay; every step toward going green is a step in the right direction, and as long as you are frank with your clients and heading toward your goals, then you are running a successful business. And your clients will appreciate your honesty.

4. Develop a marketing plan and budget accordingly. Some of the best ways to promote your business are to point out the benefits of green living: it saves money (lower utility bills), it’s healthier, and it increases business. You’ll need to set up a website and print business cards (on recycled paper of course – or better yet, make your own creative cards with scrap paper), and leave your contact information with eco-friendly businesses or public places that might attract potential clients (such as your local health food store or a natural health practitioner’s office).

Paperless promotion is appropriate, too – use the internet to start or join an environmental blog, and consider using social networking to get your name out.

Eco-consulting is a growing field, and as America continues to move in an environmentally-conscious direction, many people are going to need help meeting new environmental regulations and acting on their personal convictions. You can meet a need by providing expert advice and make a living at the same time – everyone wins, including the planet.
